Filed my EAD renewal (I-765) back in July 2025 and still no update. My current EAD expires next month. I'm on H4 EAD and my employer is getting nervous. Has anyone used the 180-day auto-extension? Does it actually work in practice, or do employers freak out?

The 540-day auto-extension is actually in effect now (not just 180 days). As long as you filed before your current EAD expired and have the I-797C receipt notice, you're authorized to work for 540 days past expiration. Show your employer the USCIS policy memo — it's very clear. My HR was nervous too but our immigration lawyer sent them the official guidance.
Consider requesting expedite processing. You can do it online through your USCIS account. Reason: "severe financial loss." My friend got his approval 2 weeks after expedite request. Worth a shot even if not guaranteed.
