Great thinking — preparation is everything. Here's your checklist: **Get from India NOW (these take the longest):** - Birth certificate (both spouses) — must be issued by municipal corporation, not hospital - If birth certificate unavailable: sworn affidavit from parents + non-availability certificate - Marriage certificate - Police clearance certificate (PCC) from India — valid for 2 years, so time it carefully - Academic transcripts + degree certificates (originals) **Get in the US:** - Passport photos (USCIS specifications, 2x2 inches) - All I-94 records (download from CBP website) - Copies of every visa stamp + I-797 approval notice you've ever had - Tax returns (last 5 years) - Employment verification letter from current employer - Medical exam (I-693) — valid for 2 years, do this close to filing date **Don't forget:** - If you have kids born in India, get their birth certificates - If name has EVER been different (marriage, legal change), get court order or gazette notification - Passport must be valid for 6+ months at time of filing Pro tip: scan everything and organize in a Google Drive folder. Label each document clearly.
MOST IMPORTANT: Get the Police Clearance Certificate from India BEFORE you need it. You must apply IN PERSON at the Passport Seva Kendra or through the Indian Embassy/Consulate in the US. Processing time varies from 2 weeks to 3 months. If you've lived in multiple cities in India, you might need PCC from each state. Start early.
