My kids (6 and 4) understand Hindi when grandparents speak but respond in English. I want them to be fluent, not just 'kitchen Hindi.' Has anyone successfully raised bilingual kids in the US? What methods worked? Apps, classes, immersion?

My kids (now 10 and 8) are fluent in Hindi AND Gujarati. Here's what worked: 1. **Strict 'only Hindi at home' rule** — hardest but most effective. We speak ONLY Hindi at home. English is for school. 2. **Grandparent FaceTime daily** — 15 min with dada-dadi in Hindi. Non-negotiable. 3. **Hindi cartoons on YouTube** — Chhota Bheem, Motu Patlu, Doraemon Hindi. They'll watch for hours. 4. **Hindi school on weekends** — our temple runs one. Even 2 hours/week builds reading/writing 5. **Summer trips to India** — 3-4 weeks every year. Full immersion. This is the game changer. 6. **Bollywood movie nights** — Friday night = family Bollywood movie with popcorn The key is CONSISTENCY. It's tempting to switch to English when you're tired. Don't. The early years are when their brains are wired for language acquisition.
Gyanshala app is great for Hindi reading/writing. Also check out Pratham Books (free Indian children's stories in multiple languages). We read one Hindi story every bedtime — started at age 2. My 7-year-old now reads Hindi independently.
